80-day, 'round-the-world electric car Zero Race takes off in Geneva today

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Green Daily, Racing

Can your electric car go 250 kilometers (155 miles) a day at a speed of 80 kilometers an hour (50 miles an hour)? Can it do that 80 days in a row all around the world?

This, pretty much, is the challenge of the Zero Race, which starts today in Geneva, Switzerland and will travel through Moscow, Shanghai, Vancouver and San Francisco - and more - before cruising into Cancun, Mexico, for a UN climate conference there at the end of November. The event is being sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program, Google Inc. and Canadian Solar, among others.

Four teams will make the drive, including the Orlikon Solar Racing Team from Switzerland in the Zero Tracer (a cousin to the X-Tracer, which is still competing in the X-Prize), the Vectrix Team from Germany, Team Trev from Australia and the Power Plaza Team from South Korea. The Zero Race is a project of Louis Palmer, who long-time readers will remember from his 'round-the-world Solar Taxi trip. Quite a life this guy leads. We call shotgun for the next event. It's not entirely easy though, as Zero Race was supposed to start in June - let's hope the arrival in Cancun won't be delayed quite as much.
