DuPont introduces Energain li-ion battery separator; claims it boosts power 30%

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Green Daily

DuPont has just introduced the world's first nanofiber-based polymeric lithium-ion battery separator that could prove to be a remarkable innovation in the rechargeable automotive battery industry. DuPont claims that its Energain nanofiber separators can increase battery power by 15-30 percent while also lengthening battery life by up to 20 percent. In addition, DuPont's nanofiber separator is said to improve battery stability at high temperatures, leading to safer operation.

DuPont believes that automakers will utilize the power-boosting Energain technology to extend the range of electric vehicles (EVs) and to provide hybrids with additional battery power that could hasten acceleration numbers. Additionally, DuPont believes that the boost in power provided by Energain will allow some automakers to reduce the number of on-board batteries needed to go a specific distance, thus leading to a significant weight reduction and an increase in fuel economy.

DuPont has begun construction on a production facility in Chesterfield County, VA. The facility, which should be operational early next year, will be able to produce enough Energain separators to supply up to 20 percent of the current hybrids and EVs in production, suggesting that DuPont firmly believes that automakers will be enamored with the benefits that Energain claims to offer.
