Cummins MerCruiser, VW team up for Tier 3-approved marine diesel engines

Filed under: Diesel, Etc., Green Daily

While most of our coverage focuses on vehicles planted on terra firma, the green revolution is taking to waters across the globe as well. Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (CMD), a leading supplier of propulsion systems for the marine industry, has teamed up with Volkswagen to jointly develop diesel marine engines that will meet Tier 3 emissions standards. Those standards go into effect in the U.S. in 2012 and in Europe in 2014.

Under terms of the agreement, Volkswagen will produce diesel marine engines with a maximum power output of 350 horsepower at its plant in Salzgitter, Germany. The engines will be supplied and marketed under the CMD name. CMD will provide after-sales support for all marine propulsion system developed under the partnership. VW's current work with clean diesel technology in the automotive industry will help guide development of Tier 3 emissions-capable diesels for marine applications. Let's hope that this clean diesel technology will make its way over to those notoriously dirty transport ships as well. Follow the jump for more info.
